A strong finish in their season opener in the Mike “Red” Wallace Game and a quick start in their opening round game of the Jerry Finan Memorial Basketball Tourney has vaulted the Carbondale Area Chargers to a 2-0 start in 2010-2011 boys’ basketball action.
The Chargers defeated Elk Lake, 52-48 in the season-opener then coasted past Forest City, 53-19 last Sunday night in Finan action.
The Chargers, the defending Finan champion, were set to play West Scranton last Monday night in a rematch of last year’s Finan Final claimed by the Chargers, 69-67.

Carbondale Area produced solid offensive possessions for the last 4:00 of the game as the Chargers spread the floor consuming clock before converting lay-ups to keep their distance from the Warriors.
Michael Torch, who netted 17 points in the contest, scorched the nets for 10 points in the first period hitting three of his first four shots including a pair of treys and free throws for a 16-8 margin.
Despite missing the front end of a pair of bonus situations and three other free throws in the next eight minutes, the Chargers held a 29-24 lead at intermission as Tom Mauro drained a trey and deuce and added an assist while Gino Carachilo finished the half with eight boards.
With Carm Carachilo leading the defensive effort, the Chargers nudged the lead to 39-33 after three periods. Carm Carachilo’s assist to Bailey Hughes for a lay-up with under 1:00 left then another pass to Hughes resulting in a one-for-two conversion from the charity stripe with :28 left pushed the lead to 52-48. The Chargers’ D did not allow a Warriors field goal atop until :04 was left as CA claimed the hard-fought win.
Torch was named CA’s MVP while Ryan Wilson (13) was selected Elk Lke’s MVP. Gino Carachilo posted 12 points and 11 rebounds while Carm Carachilo netted 10 points.
Finan Tournament
Chargers 53 Foresters 19
CA raced to a 19-1 first period margin and coasted the rest of the way.
Gino Carachilo ignited the quick start with 10 first period points and six rebounds.
Michael Torch keyed a 15-5 second period with five points as the Chargers pushed the spread to 34-6 at halftime while getting a look at 12 players.
CA outscored Forest City 19-13 in the second half. Torch (15) led the scoring while Gino Carachilo (10) finished with 12 rebounds. Joe Caruso (6) topped the Foresters’ scoring.
West Scranton 59 Honesdale 47
Honesdale led 15-11 at the end of 8:00 and 31-30 at halftime but the Invaders relentless physical man-to-man defense took its toll in the second half.
West Scranton trailed 38-32 early in the second half but produced a 27-11 run the rest of the way.
Matt Langan (17) buried five treys while Tyler Hughes (16) netted a pair of threes. Malcolm Sweeting (10) also hit twin digits.
Jordan Meyer (24) keyed the Hornets while Jesse O’Connell (10) also netted double figures.
