The Carbondale Area School Board has taken another step forward with its $15 million high school renovation project, hiring Greenfield Terrace Co. to supervise the work.
The vote was 6-1, with director Diane Harrity in opposition.  Director Nancy Mark was not in attendance.
The company, which is located in Carbondale, will begin working when construction gets underway and be paid $5,900 a month through to the completion of the project.  There is no cap on how much the company can be paid.
Greenfield Terrace was one of four companies which submitted proposals to the district.  Business manager David Cerra stated that Carbondale Area was not required to select the lowest bidder, since this is considered a professional service.
In another matter, director Jeff Arthur resigned from the board this month, citing personal issues.
Arthur, a city police officer, has served on the board for five years and worked previous to that for 16 years as an assistant football coach for the district.
He is the father of four boys — ages 6 to 13 — and said he wants to spend more time with them.  His resignation was accepted by a 7-1 vote, with director Gary Smedley casting the dissenting vote and Arthur abstaining.
Arthur has three years remaining on his current term.  The district will advertise for applicants to fill his seat.
The board also held its annual reorganization.  Board president Peter Saltisiak and vice president Smedley were re-elected to their posts.  The directors voted unanimously to schedule their meetings in 2011 for the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.
In other matters, the board has also:
•approved David Borosky as head boys junior varsity baseball coach and Bridget Brown as a non-compensated girls 6th grade assistant coach for the 2011 season;
•amended the transportation contract of John Wansacz Jr. to include an aide at a rate of $25 per day for transportation to Carbondale Area Elementary School;
•appointed Christopher Buckley and Diane Brigido for the 12th grade after-school Reading Tutor program.
