Forest City’s quest to advance to the PIAA Class A Girls’ Sweet 16 Round was denied when Sacred Heart (13-13) made a scoring rush to close the half then rushed out of the gate in the second half of a 51-34 Lady Lions’ triumph.
Sacred Heart’s Hannah Rush fueled a late first half charge to close a seven point Forest City lead to 24-21 by halftime. When Rush scored her 1,000th career point to open the second half on a score, drained a trey and followed with a scoring lay-up, the District 1 No. 2 seeded Lions roared to a 28-25 lead.
Forest City, District 2 champs, and Sacred Heart countered each other’s scoring for most of the remainder of the third period until Rush nailed another trey to boost Sacred Heart’s lead to five.
That shot seemed to buckle the Lady Foresters (17-9) as the Lady Lions finished the period with a 20-10 scoring advantage and 41-33 margin after 24 minutes of action.
Continuing to raise the defensive intensity, Sacred Heart allowed just one field goal over the final 10 minutes while finishing off the game with a 10-0 fourth quarter scoring margin.
Cassie Erdmann (12) and Katie Yale (10) led Forest City’s scoring.
