Genevieve “Jean” Burke, 94, of Carbondale died Monday evening, April 4, 2011.


Genevieve “Jean” Burke, 94, of Carbondale died Monday evening, April 4, 2011, at Mercy Hospice, Scranton after a courageous battle with lung cancer.  Her husband, Thomas L. Burke died in 1999.
Born in Archbald in 1916, the daughter of the late Eugene and Rose Moran Dougher, she was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.  A 1934 graduate of Archbald High School, she also graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas Commercial School, Archbald.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Muir’s Restaurant and later at Griff’s Corner, both of Carbondale.  She was a member of the Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary, the Ladies of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Small Town Red Hat Society, all of Carbondale.
Prior to her illness in November, she went to the Greater Carbondale YMCA three days a week, and to lunch with the girls during the week.  She walked with her “Y girls” in the Fred Ciotti Walk two years ago.  She enjoyed shopping, going to the casino, going to Ocean City, Maryland, and working on her crossword puzzles.
Surviving are: a daughter, Rose Marie Coleman, Carbondale; two grandchildren - Bill Coleman and wife Yolanda, Dresher; and Kathryn Baldwin and husband Robert, Philadelphia; three great granddaughters - Sofia, Biana, and Emilia Coleman; two sister-in-laws - Louise Dougher, New York, and Marcy Morgan, Carbondale; a brother-in-law, Joseph Burke, Delaware; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a granddog, Brandy.
She was also preceded in death by: a son, Patrick in 1965; two brothers - Eugene and Ronald; a sister, Eleanor Wallis, and a son-in-law, Bill Coleman, Sr.
The funeral was Friday, April 8, from the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose of Lima Church.  Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
