Mary Jeanne Wallis, of Clifford Twp., died Wednesday, April 20


Mary Jeanne Wallis, of Clifford Twp., died Wednesday, April 20, at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, after a brief illness.  She is the wife of Robert Wallis; the couple had been married for over 63 years.
Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Ernest and Evelyn Temple Howe, she was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale, where she served on the Session as a Church Elder and was a member of the Women’s Association. 
She was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School.  Prior to her retirement, she was an executive secretary at Tri-County Health and Human Services, Carbondale.  Previously, she also served as an office manager and secretary for the Paula Lee Dress Factory and The Blue Coal Company, both of Carbondale.  During World War II, she worked in Washington, D.C. at the O.P.A. Administration.  She was also a member of the Carbondale News Club.
She enjoyed her summers at Newton Lake, where she enjoyed swimming, and she had a great love for her family and her dogs.  She also enjoyed spending her winters in Florida with her husband Bob.  She was an extremely generous person, and she was proud of family ties to former President Ulysses S. Grant.
Also surviving are: two sons — R. Scott Wallis and his wife Diane, Clifford Twp.; Jeffery D. Wallis and his wife Nancy, Newton Lake; and three grandchildren: Karsten, Laurn, and Hunter Wallis.
She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, William.
The funeral was held Saturday, April 23, in the First Presbyterian Church, Carbondale, with services officiated by Margo Tomlinson, Pastor.  Interment, Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart. Arrangments by Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale.
