A Forest City man was arrested on drunk driving charges, and citations were issued to two passengers in the vehicle when one was found to be underage and the other fled the scene of the traffic stop on foot.
Police were already on a traffic stop at Mermelstein’s Plaza on Route 6 at 3:30 a.m. on April 3 when an unidentified motorist drove by at a high rate of speed in a 2003 Oldsmobile sedan.
Officers Corey Balinas and Brian Rock, who were assisting with the traffic stop at Mermelstein’s, pursued the speeding motorist in the 2003 Olds and trailed him to the PNC Bank parking lot on South Main Street.
The officers questioned the driver of the car, who was identified as Richard McGrantham, 26, of Forest City.  They detected a strong odor of alcohol on McGrantham’s breath and observed that his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred.
There were two other young men in the vehicle, one of whom got out of the car and fled the scene on foot.  The other passenger was identified as Martin Apostolico, 20, of 27 Belmont St. #2, and he also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Officer Fred Colonna arrived to assist and followed after the fleeing passenger, in the direction in which he had run away.  Meanwhile, McGrantham was transported to Marian Community Hospital, where he refused to allow a test to be administered to determine his blood alcohol level.  He was informed that, under the law, refusing the BAC (blood alcohol content) test would result in an automatic one-year loss of driving privileges.
McGrantham was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding the posted speed limit, and careless driving.  His car was towed from the scene of the traffic stop in the PNC Bank lot by G & G Towing.
Officer Colonna radioed his fellow officers to inform them that he had located the fleeing passenger, whom he found walking along Main Street.  Colonna took him into custody and transported him to police headquarters, where he was identified as Damien McGrantham, 24, of Forest City.  He was cited for disorderly conduct.
Apostolico was also taken to headquarters, where he was cited for underage drinking.  His mother was contacted and he was released into her custody a short time later, when she arrived at the station.
