Michele Bachmann is surging in the polls among Republican candidates, so the liberal media is going after her with a vengeance over gaffes — while continuing to give Obama a complete pass for all of his misstatements and outright falsehoods.

Republican gaffes typically involve nothing more than mangled grammar or a trivial error on historical details.  The result, however, is intense national derision from the so-called mainstream media (MSM) that goes on seemingly without end at times.

Democrat gaffes, on the other hand, tend to be far more serious — often revealing fundamental ignorance in matters critical to governing and/or of vital interest to the welfare of the American people (a shocking misunderstanding of basic economic principles, not even a minimal understanding of our military, etc.).  Yet the result in each of these cases is complete disinterest on the part of the MSM, a near total blackout of the incident so that for all intents and purposes it’s as though it never happened at all.

Columnist Kyle Smith pointed this out in a piece he wrote for the New York Post about a month ago.  And just in the past week, we saw it play out once again, precisely as it has so many times before.

Let’s start with this little-known (thanks to the MSM’s diligence) but certain fact:  The most gaffe-prone politician of all, hands-down, is Barack Obama.  The guy claims to have visited 57 states.  He thinks that “Austrian” is a language.  He doesn’t know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  He repeatedly referred to a Navy Corpsman (pronounced “cor-man”) as a “Corpse-man.”  Oh, and he also botched his own daughter’s age.

No wonder this guy takes a teleprompter with him virtually everywhere he goes.  And even then he keeps making a fool of himself with such completely idiotic statements as blaming ATM machines for the bad economy!

Are you flippin’ kidding me?  For a U.S. president to say something that ignorant is nothing short of shocking.  I don’t think even Carter would have been dumb enough to do it.

Most recently, though, Obama committed an almost inexcusable faux pas, a truly egregious error.  While speaking at Fort Drum, he claimed that SFC Jared Monti was “the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it posthumously.”  Yet Monti had actually been killed in Afghanistan in 2006.

Michael Barone, author of the definitive Almanac of American Politics, rightly called this “a horrifying mistake,” explaining “it’s really dismaying that a president...made a mistake of this magnitude.”  Obama is, after all, the Commander-in-Chief, and as military blogger Black Five pointed out:  “It shouldn’t take a teleprompter for the C-in-C to get it right.”

So why didn’t the MSM devote any coverage whatsoever to it?

The answer is obvious enough.  For the same reason they cover up all of Obama’s gaffes, and those of all other Democrats — to shield them from criticism, first of all.

But, even more than that, by trumpeting every Republican gaffe from the rooftops while ignoring every Democrat blunder, the MSM can accomplish their goal of making it look like Republicans are numbskulls who are constantly misspeaking whereas Democrats are intellectual giants who are always in complete command of the facts.

Besides, the MSM were way too busy jumping all over Michele Bachmann for claiming that John Wayne was born in Waterloo, Iowa.  The late Western actor’s parents met in Waterloo and lived there as well, but he was actually born about 150 miles away in Winterset, Iowa.  And since the serial killer John Wayne Gacy lived for a time in Waterloo, the MSM had a field day with this tidbit.

Yes, believe it or not, the big news of the past week was Bachmann’s mistaking a town with strong ties to John Wayne as being his birthplace.  That’s certainly something of critical importance to the American people.

Or, as Noel Sheppard of Newsbusters.org noted:  “It appears a Republican candidate confusing the names of two small Iowa towns most people have never heard of is far more important than a sitting president mistaking a fallen hero for a live one.”

All of this coincides, not coincidentally, with Bachmann’s surge in the polls in both Iowa and New Hampshire (the early voting states) in the race of Republican presidential contenders.  Her poll vault into the number-two position, behind Mitt Romney, has been based largely on her very impressive performance in this month's GOP debate, making her the prime target of liberal media elites everywhere.

No sooner did Bachmann become the de facto conservative challenger to the faux Republican, cardboard-cutout politician Romney than the liberal media went after her with a vengeance.

•She was the target of one of Anderson Cooper’s patently dishonest “Keeping Them Honest” segments on CNN.

•She was blasted by various MSNBC commentators for her championing of our Constitution and Founding Fathers, with Chris Matthews accusing her of trying to instigate a modern-day “Protestant Reformation [of] pure Christianity” which would, among other horrors, reinstate slavery (that’s how leftists like him define the true Christian faith).

•She was denigrated by Bill Maher as being Sarah Palin-like in that, according to Maher, both of them are “Jesus freaks and know-nothings who give off a sound only animals can hear and make microwaves explode."

Interestingly, as Newsbusters also noted, while the MSM were using PolitiFact for their attacks against Bachmann, they were “silent about the same organization counting 30 ‘barely true’ statements from Barack Obama and 49 that were outright ‘false’ [easily besting Bachmann’s tallies].”

But not to worry....Jon Stewart assures us that liberal media elites are not activists — which kind of makes you wonder how bad things would be if they were actively trying to advance the liberal agenda!

Thankfully, most of us know better.  So we understand that the difference between the MSM coverage of Bachmann’s John Wayne gaffe and their non-coverage of Obama’s Medal of Honor outrage was standard operating procedure for them.

Barone takes note of this in explaining:  “It’s interesting that mainstream media journalists who are so eager to zing Michele Bachmann for getting John Wayne’s birthplace wrong, have not been interested in asking whether [Obama’s Medal of Honor outrage] was a mistake made in ad libbing or whether the White House speechwriters and fact-checkers fell down on the job.  You might think that their chief motive is to make Obama look good and to suppress facts that make him look bad.”

Hmmm....ya think?
