Carbondale Area School District has been named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School.

Carbondale Area School District was informed last month by the U.S. Department of Education that Carbondale Area Elementary School has been named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School.
The National Blue Ribbon School Award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students have shown high levels of achievement or improved achievement. Since the 2005-06 school year, Carbondale Area Elementary School has demonstrated achievement gains in reading and mathematics for all student based on PSSA test scores.
“This is a tremendous honor,” school principal Dr. Paul Kazmarcik told the NEWS.  “It is a truly deserving recognition of our hardworking students, teachers, administrators and parents.”
Dr. Kazmarcik said the school began the Blue Ribbon nominating process in January this year when the district was informed that the elementary school was one of 14 schools in the state being considered for Blue Ribbon status.
“We formed a committee of faculty members who worked on the task of completing a 27-page application required for Blue Ribbon consideration,” he explained. “We were told on September 15 that our school had been selected as one of 304 schools in the nation for the Blue Ribbon honor.”
The program honors public schools based on one of two criteria: first, public schools whose students are high performing by state assessments, and private schools that score at the highest performance level on nationally normed tests; second, schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that improve student performance to high levels as measured by the school's performance on state assessments.
"America's long-term economic prosperity and civic engagement depends on our children receiving a world-class education," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in his announcment of the award. "National Blue Ribbon Schools are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers. Their success is an example for others to follow."
Duncan will honor Carbondale Area Elementary School with its National Blue Ribbon School Award at a conference and awards ceremony on November 14 and 15 in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Kazmarcik said the school will hold a ‘Celebration of Success’ ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 5:45 p.m.  The school will fly a Blue Ribbon banner and plan special activities for the students.
“We must also give credit to the taxpayers of the community,” Dr. Kazmarcik remarked, “who have been very supportive of our efforts to provide the hightest quality of education for all of our students.”
