With the season’s first onion snow tickling nearby slopes, skiers are excited about the upcoming season.  And to help ready them for the season, owners Bill and Lori Hopkins have stocked Guenther’s Ski Haus with equipment, wardrobe, and everything needed to tackle the slopes.
How did your business develop?
The original Guenther’s was actually started in a Honesdale basement more than 30 years ago.  Our family initially bought the larger Honesdale shop in 1998.  And when the Union Dale operation came on the market about eight years later, we bought it because we felt it was a good place to build a strong rental business while operating a full-service ski shop.  We kept the original name because it’s well known and trusted throughout the skiing business.  Our four kids have skied for years and our son, Scott, worked for a shop in Milford as a teenager, later became a ski instructor, and he eventually got me interested in the sport.  When Guenther’s came on the market, he talked his mother and me into buying it.  With the kids so involved in skiing Lori and I decided that if we wanted to see them, well, buying Guenther’s would help ensure that would happen!
What do you offer?
Everything for the skier and ski-boarding enthusiast.  We carry many of the top names in skis and boards, boots, bindings, clothing and accessories, like Lang, Tecnica, Rossignol, Volkl, Rossi, Marker, Scott, Burton, Under Armour, and more.  The technical aspect of this sport has continually changed and improved through the years, and we pride ourselves in staying abreast of everything in this business to ensure our customers’ complete satisfaction and enjoyment.  Today’s boots, for instance, are more comfortable and user friendly than they were 20-25 years ago, as they’re better customized to fit each individual man, woman, or child.  Our employees are also trained to properly and safely fit our customers with the equipment that best meets their needs and budget, as well as their particular level of skiing.  When it comes to rentals, we offer individual items as needed or the full package is available for the day, week, or season.  Some demo equipment is also available to try before buying it outright.  And our state-of-the-art service department provides full tune-ups for the recreational and racing skiers and snowboarders.
Who are your customers?
Elk Mountain is a well known area site for skiers and snowboarders, and it offers us a strong customer base.  We see many skiers from the tri-state area, but the majority of our customers are locals so we’re dealing with many of the same people year after year.  This area has a very good home-town base and a loyal following of friends and neighbors, and for that we’re grateful and appreciative.  For all of our customers, everyone at Guenther’s strives to provide the best services possible by trying to ensure everything is done right, and we’ll go out of our way to do just that.
