Boasting one of the top pitchers in the area over the last four years, the Chargerettes rang up their share of wins via low-scoring, scratch-and-claw efforts.
With Makenzie Lynn, the school all-time strikeout leader now firing aspirin on the pitching mound at Shippensburg University, the Chargerettes will have to rely more heavily on their fielding ability.
With five starters back in the infield, that’s a solid place to start.
“We have back the entire infield, so defense should be our major strength,” offered first year coach, Marijo Naniewicz.
Naniewicz, who has guided these players through the junior high level, is excited about the challenge ahead.
“Pitching will be our biggest challenge,” said Naniewicz. “Whoever is on the mound will have huge shoes to fill.”
Seniors, Brianna Grunza (SS) and Brielle Turano (1B) will take over much of the pitching duties.
Lindsey Bucklaw (C), a four-year starter, provides experience to handle the pitching staff. The rest of the returnees in the infield include: Brandi Grunza (3B) and Sam Griffiths (2B).
Juniors, Ashley Kizer (OF), Amanda Ogozaly (OF) and sophomores, Paige Kohut (OF-P) and Brittany Griffiths (OF) saw action a year ago.
“A lot of our underclassmen have potential, so how quickly they help will be a key,” said Naniewicz.
Sophomore, Morgan Walsh (OF) and frosh, Audrey Gardus (SS-OF), Sarah Totsky (1B-OF), Morgan Mauro (1B-OF), Stacy Kohut (OF), Natasha Gillott (OF-P) and Mackenzie Mancuso (OF) are expected to play contributing roles.
“As always hitting we be an area of concern,” noted Naniewicz. “A number of girls worked out in the off season, so we are hoping to get into the swing of things early.”
Looking ahead, Valley View is the divisional favorite according to Naniewicz. “The rest of the division is a toss-up,” she offered.
Old Forge, Mid Valley, Lakeland, Holy Cross, Riverside and Dunmore join the Chargerettes and Lady Cougars.
