A  permanent historical display of a Native American dugout canoe discovered in Clifford Twp. and donated to the Clifford Twp. Historical Society by Jim and Valerie Cole, will be open to the public on Tuesday, May 17, in the front entrance of the Clifford Twp building. The unveiling of a mural by Michelle Jaconia McLain, depicting the lives of local Native Americans, will also take place that day.  Mrs. McLain will be available throughout the day to explain the mural.
“While working on the mural, I used the internet to research Native American tribes who lived in our aea,” she explained. “I tried to present in the mural an accurate portrait of every aspect of their lives, from their dwellings to their use of water transportation, like the historic canoe preserved in Clifford Twp, which will be on display with the mural.”
The public is invited to attend a discussion of the canoe display and mural on Tuesday, May 17, from 7 to 8 p.m. with mural artist Michelle Jaconia McLain and Clifford Twp. Historical Society director Carol Gargan, PhD. This program is funded by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Native American refreshments will be served, and there will be gifts for children. A bake sale will benefit the Clifford Twp. Historical Society.
