When Kyle Kiehart burst onto the varsity basketball scene as a freshman in 2009-2010,  Lakeland Chiefs’ basketball coach, Dave Rosenkrans knew he had a scorer.
The Lakeland sharpshooter netted 20 points in the first game of his varsity career and followed that with a 30 point performance against Lake Lehman.
The points have just kept coming.
Kiehart, now a junior, recently netted his 1,000th career point in a battle with Carbondale Area in the Pete Turonis/Pennstar Bank Classic.
The 6-0 guard has been one of the Lackawanna League’s top scorers during the last two seasons and is on pace to be among the top point producers in 2011-2012.
“Kyle has become not just a shooter but a pretty good scorer as his game has evolved,” said Rosenkrans.
Kiehart, who is part of a four-guard up-tempo attack, caught teams by surprise his freshman season but as his career has progressed, teams have been very aware of his whereabouts on the floor.
“His freshman year, it was a lot of one-on-one defenses but now, he has attracted two or three guys jumping at him at times,” said Rosenkrans.
While Kiehart’s ability to shoot the trey and mid-range shot and his knack of getting to the basket has been his forte, he’s also begun to get a lot of points off his defensive efforts according to his coach.
“Kyle has improved his defensive skills and works hard on defense.” said Rosenkrans. “That has led to a lot of transition points. He had seven steals the other night (vs. Forest City) which led to points.” In that game, Kiehart netted 27 points.
Kiehart tallied 453 points a year ago and could eclipse that mark this season. He could become the school’s all-time scorer by the time his career ends in 2013.
Until then, he’ll continue to draw opposing team’s attention while he strives to lead the Chiefs to a run at the Lackawanna League D-IIII title and some post season noise.
