The Carbondale Southside Neighborhood Association & Crime Watch Group recently presented a $551.68 donation to the Carbondale Skate Park on Belmont St.
According to Michelle Cigna, a former member of the Southside Neighborhood Association, the group dissolved earlier this year, but still had funds in its treasury.
“The Association collected the money from coin drops, donations, and membership dues,” Michelle explained. “The skate park was getting a bad rap for a while after it opened, but it has become a good place for kids to gather and have fun.”
She gave credit for the park’s improved reputation to Angelo Perri, director/coordinator of Neighborhood Outreach, who has been overseeing the park.
“Kids who go there respect Angelo,” Michelle said. “He talks to them and listens to them. He’s nurturing and caring, and has made the park another place for kids to call home.”
This summer, the Neighborhood Outreach as provided two free meals a day for any children under 18 who wanted lunch or dinner. Angelo also organized a skate competition there on Saturday, Aug. 14.
He said the money from the Southside Association was used to fund trophies for the skate competition, and will also help with park maintenance and equipment.
