Carbondale will be featured in WVIA’s "Our Town" documentary series. “Our Town: Carbondale” will premiere on Wednesday, April 18 at 8 p.m. on WVIA-TV. The "day-in-the-life" one-hour video scrapbook will focus on the people, places and happenings of Carbondale, PA., as seen through the eyes of its residents.
WVIA will hold a community/volunteer planning meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12 at the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, 27 North Main St. All are welcome.
At the community/volunteer planning meeting, Carbondale residents will be invited to discuss which landmarks, events and local stories the program should tell about their town. WVIA will answer questions about the project and ask volunteers to suggest a list of subjects and events to videotape. Volunteers will be asked to videotape subjects of interest around Carbondale to help of WVIA create the documentary. WVIA hopes to recruit 20 to 25 area residents with personal camcorders.
Anyone interested in being a videographer and/or storyteller for the program should contact WVIA “Our Town” producer Lisa Mazzarella by calling 570-602-1164, or by e-mailing lisamazzarella@wvia.org.
"There's a lot of excitement growing about profiling the Pioneer City,” commented Mazzarella. “Aside from being the oldest city in Lackawanna County, lots of ‘firsts’ happened in Carbondale, including the D&H Gravity Railroad, and the first St. Patrick's Day parade in the county. There's a tremendous mix of history, ethnic pride and enthusiasm in Carbondale, so we're looking forward to some great stories in the coming months."
As Northeastern Pennsylvania’s public television station serving a very large geographic area, the "Our Town" project was initiated in an effort to involve area communities and residents with WVIA. The "Our Town" documentary series is intended to treat viewers to the many personalities, perspectives, and possibilities that local towns have to offer.
