Carbondale Area Band has recently received word that two of the band members from the senior class made it to the regional competition.

Their names are Brett Gillott and Patrick Smith and they have traveled a long and successful road to get to this point.

So far Brett and Patrick have qualified at three separate auditions to move forward this year.

First was in November at District Pre-Auditions; then again at Districts in January to qualify for Regionals and lastly at Regionals, Brett qualified for states.

For pre-auditions, these kids were auditioning for 6-8 hours and that was just our District 9 alone. There are 12 Districts in the state. Again this year, he placed first, or rather he got first chair. At the state level of this festival there are only 10 available percussion chairs.

This would of course mean that Brett, according to PMEA judges, is ranked as one of the 10 best high school percussionists in the state.

In our whole school’s history, Carbondale has only ever had one other student go to this level of the festivals.

I interviewed Mrs. Megan Hulse, our band director here at CA, and asked her what she thought of her student’s achievement and she said, “I am incredibly proud of what both Patrick and Brett have accomplished this year.

“His next round of auditions will take place on April 19, 2017 in Erie, PA.”

I asked Brett what this accomplishment means to him and he said, “I represented our school last year at this state level competition so I’m very happy to be returning to compete.

“It means a lot. I have always loved to play music and intend to pursue Music performance as a college major and future career. I really hope I do well at states.”

I asked Patrick if he intends to pursue Music for a career, and he said, “At this point, I don’t plan on attending college for music but I do know that music and performing will always be a big part of my life.”
