Carbondale Area has been recognized nationally by U.S. News & World Report for proficiency in English and mathematics when compared against over twenty thousand schools nationwide.

When it comes to student achievement, it helps to put things into perspective, and yearly evaluations such as the one conducted by U.S. News and World Report definitely serve that purpose.

Schools are ranked based on how well they serve their students. U.S. News conducts the ranking by looking at student exit test scores for english and math. Overall student performance and disadvantaged student performance scores are also considered.

Carbondale Area School District was ranked as being 78 percent proficient in english, and 64 percent proficient in math. With these scores, Carbondale Area received the Bronze Award, joining the national list of Best High Schools by U.S. News.

U.S. News reviews all eligible public high schools for the ranking. Pennsylvania had 675 eligible high schools. The testing data used to calculate the ranking Common Core data, scores collected from Advanced Placement testing and statewide proficiency test results.

“I am very proud that the hard work of our teachers and students has resulted in Carbondale Area Jr –Sr High School being consistently named one of the top high schools in the nation,” said Joseph Farrell, high school principal. “It is a great honor for not only our school but for our entire community as well.”

In order to create this list of 2017 Best High Schools, U.S. News teamed up with RTI International, an independent research institute headquartered in North Carolina. Best High Schools had to meet certain criteria to be considered. Schools must exceed expectations in performance levels compared to their poverty levels.

Best High Schools are also expected to have disadvantaged and minority students exceed state averages.

Graduation rates should exceed the basic national standard and student performance on Advanced Placement exams should reflect a readiness for college.

Carbondale Area Junior-Senior High School has reached the high ranking five years in a row.

“This is quite a consistent achievement for our local high school here at Carbondale Area,” said Nancy T. Osborne, Public Relations representative for Carbondale Area.

“It puts us in an elite group of schools throughout the nation that are top performers.

“This is the fifth year that we have achieved this distinction.”
