Vivian Kohut, 85, of Carbondale, passed away Aug. 2, 2017 at Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton, after a brief illness.
She will be happy to be reunited in heaven with her husband, Joseph Kohut.
They celebrated 51 years of marriage before his death in 2003.
Born in Carbondale, daughter of the late Eugene and Bertine Thomas Leventhall, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Carbondale. Before retirement, she was employed by Lackawanna County in the Tax Claim Bureau Office.
She was previously employed by the City of Carbondale, working for Mayors A.J. Kaufman and Fred Mancuso.
Vivian was previously chairwoman of the Carbondale Housing Authority and the former president of the Carbondale Housing Corp. (Summit Gardens) board of directors.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Frank Moro and his staff for the wonderful, compassionate care that Vivian was given.
She is survived by her son, Joseph Kohut and wife, Donna; and her daughter, Deborah Ruddy and husband, Tom, with whom she resided, all of Carbondale.
She gave her son and daughter all of her love and gratitude for the wonderful care they provided.
Also surviving are her grandson, Jason Kohut and his companion, Susan Robachefski, Dallas; and granddaughter, Megan Kohut and her companion, Michael Ziegler; and great-grandson, Freddie, all of St. Croix, Virgin Islands. She loved them dearly along with her little dog, Mitzie.
She is also survived by a sister, Marge Zarekas and husband, George, Carbondale and Pompano Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter who died at birth; her grandson, Joseph Kohut; her stepfather, William Miller; three brothers, Billy, Donald and Milton Leventhall; and two sisters, Betty and Bertine Coles.
We want to thank our mother for being such a caring, loving mother and grandmother. You will surely be missed and always in our hearts.

Funeral and services will be private at the convenience of the family with interment in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
