OLD FORGE — Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) reported that a robbery occurred Dec. 7.   According to police, just before 1:30 p.m., State Police at Wyoming and Wyoming Borough PD responded to an armed robbery at the M & T Bank on Wyoming Ave in Wyoming Borough, Luzerne County.   Bank workers reported a man with a handgun entered the bank and demanded money. The money was placed in a plastic shopping bag and the man fled the scene in a black PT Cruiser.   Wyoming Borough and West Wyoming Borough Police spotted the vehicle in a parking area off Wyoming Ave, adjacent to the Mid-Way Shopping Center, and as they approached the vehicle, the driver fled.   Wyoming, West Wyoming PD and State Police units pursued the vehicle, along with several other municipal police units as the vehicle traveled through various municipalities. The vehicle traveled north on Wyoming Ave, crossed the 8th Street Bridge then drove north on River Rd, continuing through Pittston and finally into Old Forge.   The operator stopped the vehicle in front of the Old Forge Animal Hospital in Old Forge Borough, Lackawanna County where officers engaged the suspect and shots were fire by local and State Police.   The suspect was struck and subsequently transported to Geisinger CMC Hospital in Scranton where he died from his injuries.   The suspect’s handgun was recovered outside his vehicle and money was recovered from inside the vehicle.   The Troop R Major Case Team and Lackawanna County DA’s Office are jointly investigating this incident. No officers were injured as a result of the incident.   The Troop R Forensic Services Unit continue to process the scene and the investigation is continuing.   All officers and Troopers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as their agencies’ policies dictate.

The suspect has been identified as 40-year-old John Souder of Old Forge, PA. An autopsy is scheduled for Dec. 8.
