CARBONDALE – Some of the area’s best restaurants are culling their tastiest recipe files as they plan to share their culinary skills during the sixth annual Taste of the Town event. Sponsored by the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, this year’s tasting will enable guests to indulge on a wide variety of foods and beverages on Sunday November 11th, 2:00pm-5:00pm, at the Hotel Anthracite, 25 St. Main Street.

“This event generally attracts nearly 300 people,” said John Gorel, Chamber Director. “It’s very popular, as it gives guests an opportunity to comfortably roam throughout the hotel’s grand ballroom and taste samplings from their favorite restaurants or try something new and different. It’s Fall too, a great time to get out to do something FUN! And this event really presents itself as a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday afternoon out. It’s a totally social event with a wide variety of delicious foods, wines, and brewery samplings. It also gives area restaurants great exposure to both local folks and the many visitors this event draws from throughout the region.”

"Our city is steadily growing, and the Taste of the Town welcomes locals and newcomers alike,” added city Clerk Michele Bannon. “Several new eateries have opened since last year’s event. So, if someone hasn’t checked out Carbondale before now, the Taste of the Town helps to de-mystify any illusions some may have about Carbondale. We’re not just a small former coal-mining town with great people and a rich and interesting history … our many and varying venues offer an extremely wide assortment of some of the very best and most enjoyable dining sites in the region. Between this event or simply enjoying a walk around the city, guests will definitely find a great selection of so much of what our city has to offer.”

Included among some of the various restaurants and businesses already fine-tuning their event presentations are Plate d’Azure, Barbour’s Bakery, Kol Steakhouse, Chip & Stone, Speakeasy Saloon & Resort, Roxanne’s, and the Carwanna. Some of the region’s wineries and breweries that will also be on site include Capra Collina, Case Quattro, Iron Heart, and the Stephan Pendrak Family Winery. “We reach out to and plan for about 30 presenters,” Gorel said, “and we always have a full house for this event. The varieties and types of foods presented at Taste of the Town offer a great representation of the wide range of restaurants that Carbondale has to offer. This event is really a tasting feast!”

And while guests taste and sample the many foods and beverages offered, they will be entertained by acoustic guitarist Chris Mullineaux. This former Baltimore native relocated to the Elk Mountain area a year ago and has quickly gained an impressive following for both his solo performances and his guitar play with the region’s Fuzzy Mudd trio group.

While the Taste of the Town event has grown to become a much-anticipated annual social event, it is also a popular fundraiser for Carbondale. “This is a mission-oriented event,” Gorel explained. “The many participating businesses are also members of the Chamber. So, while this event affords them the opportunity to promote their respective business, the Chamber itself is also being promoted.

“This year, we’re all working toward getting more area youth involved in the Chamber and its many activities,” continued Gorel, “as the proceeds will help resurrect the Chamber Youth Board. The youth board is community based and aids students in learning more about business in general. It helps teach them about workforce development, helps to better prepare them for the overall world of business, and it helps kids find a healthy direction for their future dreams and endeavors.”

With the holidays just around the corner, are you looking to book your own upcoming holiday party or cater a special event? In addition to tasting and enjoying the many foods and beverages of the area, guests at Taste of the Town will also have the opportunity to talk to the various vendors and gain insight into the numerous possibilities for their own events. The attending vendors will also be offering gift certificates for sale.
