Something big is brewing in the Pioneer City.
Four modern-day ‘pioneers’ hope hops will make Carbondale the site of its first beer bewery in many years, and the only one currently in Lackawanna County.  The brewmeisters started experimenting with their own original recipe about eight years ago, and began officially mixing it up last fall in a small room at the Carbondale Technology Transfer Center (CTTC) on Enterprise Drive, under the label, “3 Guys & A Beerd” (a.k.a. “3GB”).
Why?
“We all love beer,” explains John Waering, of Carbondale, the marketing force behind the team.  The other partners are Matt Zuk (brewmaster), and brewers Jon Bronson, and Dave Oakley.
“So we got some kits and books,” John continues, “and started home brewing.  At first, we thought we might create our own brand and open a six-pack shop or a pub. But we decided that would be too involved, so two years ago we started the permit and licensing process to just brew and sell to pubs.  We got start-up space at the CTTC where we set up the kegs and ingredients, and brewing began last fall.”
(As for the label — when the partners started brewing, John was the only one with a beard; hence the only beard in the name and logo.  Since then the others have traces of facial hair, but the ‘Beerd’ name was already patented, so it stuck.)
While working on a recipe, the brewers tasted many other beers, particularly Belgian varieties and India pale ale, a traditional British brew.  3GB finally settled on two recipes to begin brewing, and has nine others in development.  The team hopes to hold a grand-opening tasting at a pub in Scranton, Backyard Alehouse, early this year, and eventually grow to establish their brewery in Carbondale.  John (the beard) and Jon are Carbondale Area graduates, and Matt and Dave are Lakeland grads.
“We all grew up locally, and still live and work in the area,” John says.  “So we’d like to establish our brewery here, to stay local and create jobs.  We want to give something back to Carbondale.”
