Sarah Kandrot, daughter of Joseph and Patricia Kandrot, 18 Orchard St, has been awarded a three-year, fully funded PhD scholarship to undertake research in the field of coastal morphodynamics at University College Cork, Ireland.
Kandrot is a graduate of Carbondale Area Jr. Sr. High School Class of 2005, and completed her undergraduate degree at Boston University in earth science in 2009.  In 2010, she obtained a first class honours higher diploma in geography at University College Cork, and was admitted to a masters program there in Coastal Zone Management and Geographical Information Systems, to be completed in September of this year.  Her academic success on the masters program, first class honors to date, was a key component of consideration for the award of the PhD scholarship.
University College Cork is a constituent college of the National University of Ireland and is one of the leading Universities in Europe, established in 1845.
A component of this scholarship will involve undertaking paid academic work in the university under the direction of Dr. Robert Devoy.  Kandrot will complete her PhD research in September 2014.  Her career ambition has always been to become a research scientist within a third level institute.
Kandrot wishes to acknowledge the wide range of support from her family, especially her mother and father, and her great aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Gwen Delfino, also of Carbondale.
