Lakeland Jr. Sr. High School Chiefs football players, juniors Nicholas Humphreys and William Demyan, have organized a food drive, ‘Let’s Tackle Hunger,’ as their senior project. The drive will benefit the Montdale United Methodist Church food pantry and families in the Lakeland School District.
“The need for food assistance from local food pantries has steadily grown due to the economy and natural disasters over the past few years,” Nicholas explained. “The number of needy families in the Scott Township area has also risen to include roughly 40 to 60 families each month seeking assistance.”
The food drive and collection will take place before the Lakeland vs. Dunmore football game at Lakeland Stadium on Friday, Oct. 14, starting at 5 p.m. and will run until halftime. Any non-perishable food items will be accepted.
For every two items brought in, fans will receive a ticket for a chance to win one of the three footballs being raffled off at halftime. These footballs were donated and autographed for this event. Winners must be present at halftime to win the footballs.
“Two footballs were donated by the Philadelphia Eagles, with one signed by Michael Vick and Steve Smith,” William said. “The other is signed by Vick, Smith and Nnamdi Asomugha. The third ball is a Penn State football and is signed by quarterback Matt McGloin of Penn State and was donated for the event by his parents.
