Fell Charter Elementary School honored local veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 2 (in observance of Veterans Day.
Under the direction of 4th-grade teacher Mrs. Jill McGurgan, more than 20 veterans representing all branches of the military participated.
Younger students were treated to classroom visits by the veterans, who became classroom readers to the children, and then talked to them about their militray experiences. The older students took part in roundtable discussions with the veterans, who shared stories about their service, the missions they encountered, the people, the places they had been.
"It was really wonderful to hear the students talk about having the opportunity to sit and talk to the vets. They said it was the best history lesson they had ever had because these men lived it. They can’t wait to have them back!" stated McGurgan.
An afternoon luncheon (with table decor of red, white and blue) gave the veterans time to talk with each other about their military experinces.
A Veterans Day Assembly attended by the veterans, student body, staff, and parents included students reading letters and poems. Fifth grader Kristina Gorel wrote: “Thank you for your loyalty and dedication to our country. If it wasn't for you, who knows where our country would be today. The Veterans were presented with red longstem carnations wrapped in red, white and blue ribbons. The student body sang the song, "Proud to Be An American."
