Scott Opalka has been named valedictorian of Carbondale Area Jr. Sr. High School Class of 2011.

Joseph W. Farrell, principal of Carbondale Area Jr. Sr. High School, has announced that Scott Opalka has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2011, Michael Torch is salutatorian, and Jeff Cosklo has earned third academic honor.
Scott Opalka
Scott is ranked first out of 108 students in the senior class. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and served as president of Student Council for the 2010-11 school year.  Scott is a member of the Physics Club, the Science and Technology Club, the computer club, and the newspaper staff.  In addition, as a junior, Scott participated in the Career Academy Program sponsored by the Scranton Chamber of Commerce through which he and other selected students from Lackawanna County were afforded the opportunity to learn more about career opportunities in northeast Pennsylvania in the areas of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, architecture, finance, and more. Scott was Carbondale Area’s Scholar of the Year.
Scott will be pursuing a degree in the science field with an emphasis in pharmacy, as chemistry is his favorite subject.
He is the son of Tom and Lisa Opalka, Carbondale. 
Michael Torch
  Michael was involved in many sports at Carbondale Area, including football, basketball, and baseball.  He received all-star status for both football and basketball.  He is a four-year member of the National Honor Society and the Distinguished Honor Roll.  He was also a member of the Physics Club and SADD.   
Michael was a member of the Scholastic Team, and Student Council.  He participated in the Career Academy Program at the University of Scranton, a program sponsored by the Scranton Chamber of Commerce. 
Michael plans to attend Penn State University, where he will pursue a degree in engineering.
He is the son of Andrew and Carol Torch, Carbondale.
Jeff Cosklo
Jeff has been involved in many extracurricular activities throughout his high school career, including serving as vice president of the Physics Club.  He is also a member of the Science and Technology Club.  Jeff has been a six-year member of the National Honor Society, as well as a six-year member of the Academic Honors Program.  He is also a member of the Student Council.  Jeff also participated in sports at CA.  He was on the varsity soccer and basketball teams.  He was also voted a first team all-star for soccer.  After graduation, Jeff plans to attend Bloomsburg University, where he will pursue a degree in Exercise Science.
