Sean Farber, of Carbondale, and a junior at Niagara University, went on a 14-day ‘starvation’ diet in November to draw attention to the hunger crisis in Somalia.
Why did you do this? The prime minister of Somalia spoke at Niagara about the widespread starvation in his country. It made me want to do something to make others aware of the problem, and possibly make donations to help. I also wanted to experience the sensation of what major hunger might feel like.
How did you do that? From November 7 to 21, I reduced my daily food intake to 1,000 calories, the amount that is just enough to sustain life, and drank only water. I checked in with the campus clinic every day to measure the effects my diet was having on my health, such as weight loss and blood pressure.
What were the results? Well, I found out you can’t really emulate the kind of suffering people go through who lack food, proper nutrition and medical care over a long period of time. I lost about 10 pounds and had less energy, but that was all. I hope the more important result is that my experiment will help others be aware of the problem in Somalia and send donations.
How can they do that? They can go on the Internet to: seanfarber.tumblr.com. All the information is there, including more details about my diet.
