A Clifford man with a DUI-suspended license was arrested again last month for driving under the influence.
Police Chief Jeffrey Taylor observed an unidentified motorist in a red pick-up truck fail to stop for a posted sign in the northbound lane of the intersection at River St. and 7th Ave. at 11:54 p.m. on Nov. 1.
Chief Taylor made a traffic stop, pulling the driver over to the side of the road, and Officer Aaron Haley arrived shortly thereafter to assist.
The driver was identified as Thomas O’Brien, 52, of Clifford.  Taylor and Haley detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.  They also observed several empty beer cans and two unopened bottles of liquor in open view inside the front cab of the truck, along with a half-empty beer in the cup holder.  The vehicle was towed from the scene by G & G Towing and impounded at their Pike St. location.
According to the affidavit, O’Brien told police that he’d had a few beers, adding that he had two previous DUI convictions and couldn’t afford a third one on his record.  A check of his license determined that it was DUI-suspended.
O’Brien was transported to Marian Community Hospital for a test to determine his blood alcohol level, but he refused to allow the test to be administered.  He was informed that refusal would result in an automatic one-year loss of driving privileges.
Afterward, he was transported to G & G Towing to retrieve some tools from his vehicle, then he was released to Pioneer Cab Co. to be driven home.
O’Brien was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and failing to stop for a posted sign.
Officer Haley filed the affidavit.
