A city man was arrested after attempting to scrap metal from a property on Cottage St. — and then nearly running over Joseph Tuzze, the property owner, and Al Tuzze while fleeing in his vehicle.
The Tuzzes noticed an older man and middle-aged woman drive onto the property in a green mini-van with a broken windshield and damaged driver’s side door, which appeared to be a Dodge or Chrysler, at 10:38 a.m. on Nov. 4. Then they got out and started loading scrap metal from a pile on the Tuzze property into the vehicle.
The Tuzzes walked over and confronted the two, telling them to stop what they were doing and start removing the scrap metal from their mini-van. However, while Al was calling 911 to report the attempted theft, the two suspects jumped into the mini-van and started to pull away even though both of the Tuzzes were standing right in front of the vehicle.
The male suspect drove right towards them, and the Tuzzes had to push each other out of the vehicle’s path to avoid being struck by it as the suspects fled the scene. Joseph got into his truck and pursued them but was unable to catch up to their vehicle.
Later, the Tuzzes described the suspects to police as a white male in his 60s with a long gray beard and a white female approximately 40 years of age with dark hair. Joseph stated that the same vehicle was involved in a prior theft of scrap metal from his property, about a week earlier, and he was able to get the plate number during that incident.
Police traced the vehicle to Raymond Unangst, 65, of 159 Locust St. #1, who was identified as the male suspect.
He was arrested on charges of attempted theft, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, criminal trespassing, operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving without a valid license.
Unangst was transported to central booking at the Lackawanna County Courthouse Processing Center.
