A city woman was arrested in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 for being drunk and disorderly, and assaulting a police officer.
Officers Aaron Haley and Fred Colonna were dispatched to the residence of Elijah Conrad and Marguerite Cwalinski, 24, at 42 Hospital St. at 4:23 a.m. on Jan. 1.  They were responding to a report that Cwalinski had left the residence with her 3-month-old infant following an argument.
They found Cwalinski pushing the baby in a stroller in the area of 48 Hospital St., and Officer Haley approached her to question her about the incident.  Officer Colonna continued on to the residence to interview Conrad.
Cwalinski was crying and told Haley that Conrad, her live-in boyfriend, threw her out.  Haley asked her to walk back to the residence with him, but she refused and started yelling at him for no reason.
She appeared to be in an intoxicated condition, so Haley asked her how much she had to drink.  She became more unruly, stating that she had at least six beers but that she was 24 years old and could drink if she wanted to do so.  Haley asked her to calm down but she refused.
Haley asked her again to walk back to her residence with him so the matter could be cleared up, and she began yelling obscenities at him, awakening the neighbors.  Colonna arrived at that time and told Haley that Conrad said Cwalinski had been drinking all night and wouldn’t go to sleep, leading to an argument between her and Conrad, then Cwalinski left the residence with her baby.
According to the affidavit, when Cwalinski heard this, she “flipped out.”  She started screaming again at both officers, and when Haley attempted to take her into custody for refusing to comply with his requests, she punched him in the ear area on the right side of his head.
The officers subdued Cwalinski, handcuffed her and placed her in the back of the squad car.  While they were interviewing Conrad, she tried to break one of the rear windows by kicking against the doors, and she tried to smash out the back window using the handcuffs around her wrists.
Cwalinski was transported to headquarters, where she continued to act in a disorderly manner.  She was then taken to Marian Community Hospital after faking seizures in front of police and Cottage Hose personnel.  She also threatened to kill herself several times and said she was on numerous medications.
At the hospital, police signed for her to be examined by a mental health representative with Northwestern Human Services due to these threats and her erratic behavior.  Police also contacted Children & Youth Services about the infant.  Conrad, who was not intoxicated at the time of the incident and remained cooperative throughout, said the baby was not his child, but he agreed to watch the baby until CYS could place the child in another home later that day.
Cwalinski was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and public drunkenness.
