The final 8th-grade class to matriculate from Sacred Heart Elementary School held its graduation ceremony on Wednesday, June 8,at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Mass was concelebrated by the Rev. Russell Motsay, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, and Monsignor David Tressler, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church.
Valedictorian Sam Piorkowski and salutatorian Melissa Morgan spoke about their years at Sacred Heart School, their sadness at the school’s closing, and their hope that they and their classmates will experience happiness and success during their upcoming high school years.
Following the celebration of the mass, Principal Ellen Murphy awarded diplomas to the seventeen graduates, and 8th grade teacher Dan Banicky turned the tassels of the graduates.
Academic achievements were recognized during Class Night, Monday, June 6. Among the awards received were: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Awards from the Diocese of Scranton to Gabrielle Giordano and Marissa Grecco; Carbondale Trinity Club Scholarships to Jordan Mellon and Gabrielle Giordano; Bishop’s Youth Awards to Marissa Grecco and Tyler Belcastro; Ignatius Scholar commendations from Scranton Prep to Brian Krell and Sam Piorkowski; a Holy Cross Academic Achievement Award to Sam Piorkowski; Holy Cross Crusader Scholarships to Brian Krell and Marissa Grecco; and Holy Cross Athletic Awards to Gabrielle Giordano, Marissa Grecco, and Brian Krell. In addition to these awards, attorney Timothy Kelly presented the Irish-American Men’s Association of Lackawanna County memorial scholarship to Tyler Belcastro, and members of the Mauer family presented the Happy Home Trust Fund Scholarship to Sam Piorkowski.
Awards for outstanding academic achievement in subject areas were as follows: Math, Marissa Grecco; Advanced Math, Brian Krell; English, Mehan Mosher; Social Studies, Sam Piorkowski; Spelling to Mark Roche; Science to Juliana Muta; Literature to Marissa Grecco; and Religion, Sam Piorkowski. Jordan Cebular and Megan Mosher received awards for perfect attendance.
Class Night included opening and closing prayers composed by Sr. Jacinta Guinther, I.H.M.; a dinner catered by Rick Michalek; a reading by Sam Piorkowski of the Dr. Suess poem, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”; a song performed by Jordan Mellon and Emma Cigna on guitar, with vocals by Melissa Morgan, Megan Mosher, Marissa Grecco, Juliana Muta, and Gabrielle Giordano; and a slideshow presentation by Maureen Piorkowski, recounting the students’ experiences at Sacred Heart Elementary School from preschool through 8th grade.
