Tom and Marlén Kostiw are the owners of MELT Enterprises, distributors of Babunya’s Gourmet Spices, and tenants of the Kitchen Incubator at Carbondale Technology Transfer Center since 2009.
What is Babunya’s Gourmet Spice?
It’s an Old World gourmet spice that has been a centuries-old secret recipe passed down through generations of the Kostiw family, who traveled from Eastern Europe to Italy and Brazil, before settling in the United States. [Babunya translates to grandmother in Ukraine, and the spice is named after Tom’s mother Janina.]
What do you do at the Kitchen Incubator?
We produce, bottle and distribute Babunya’s products, which in addition to the gourmet spice includes cinnamon, black pepper, garlic, onion, and parsley. Our products are all-natural, with no MSG, artificial flavorings, preservatives, fillers or additives. Our products are available in local markets and from our website at www.babunyas.com.
How do you test your products?
CTTC and The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) recently coordinated a taste-tasting group to try our newest product, Gourmet Venison Samosa, a dough-filled pocket of seasoned venison. Then they completed a questionnaire covering taste, appearance, packaging, price, distribution, quality, convenience and so on, followed by a discussion with us. Each participant received a gift bag containing Babunya’s products.
