(Mary) Janis Pender, 87, of Carbondale, passed away September 28, 2017 at Geisinger CMC surrounded by her sister and family.
Born in Carbondale, on April 7, 1930, daughter of the late Donald and Leona Linnen Pender, Janis was a lifelong resident of Carbondale and a devout Catholic.
She was a member of St. Rose Church, Carbondale and attended mass almost every day.
Janis was a graduate of St. Rose High School, Carbondale, and a member of the Ladies’ Ancient Order of Hibernians, Carbondale. She worked at J.J. Newberry, Carbondale for over 30 years, then also at the Carbondale Library, Senior Center, and Social Security Office.
Janis enjoyed shopping, doing crossword puzzles and going to the salon.
Because she never learned how to drive, she could be seen walking through town, on her way to church and to Bob McDonnell's Restaurant to have breakfast with her friends.
Janis was extremely proud of her entire family, truly believing in each of us and seeing the good in everything we did.
She is survived by her sister: Mary Borosky and husband John, Simpson; two sisters-in-law Millie Pender and May Para Pender; and many neices and nephews: John Borosky and wife Shelly; Mary Lynn Surace and husband Frank; Jerry Borosky and wife Gayle; Cari Burrell and husband Fred; Patty Asinski and husband Mark; Joe Borosky and wife Dawn; Betsy Ciprich and husband Toby; Donald Pender and wife Peggy; Kevin Pender and wife Debbie; Nancy LaTournous and husband James; Judy Rutledge and husband Mike; and Suzanne Pender and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews, especially Amber and Laura.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers: Donald Pender, Gerard Pender and Rev. John A. Pender; and an infant sister Nancy.

The funeral was Oct. 2 from the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in Saint Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.
Interment, Saint Rose of Lima Cemetery, Carbondale.
