Fred J. Mancuso, P.E., former mayor of Carbondale, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. Born and raised in Carbondale, Mr. Mancuso is survived by "the light of his life" and best friend for the past 53 years, his wife, the former Frances Lapera.
A former Professor of Engineering at Penn State University, Worthington Scranton Campus, Fred retired after 25 years of teaching. Mr. Mancuso received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University, his Master's Degree in Engineering from Penn State University, as well as completing further post-graduate studies at Syracuse University. Prior to teaching at Penn State, Mr. Mancuso was a project engineer for General Electric Company and Bendix Corporation. He also held positions with Honeywell, Inc. and RCA. Mr. Mancuso was a registered engineer in the state of Pennsylvania, as well as holding a professional affiliation with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was a member of the American Society of Engineering Education, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Pennsylvania and National Society of Professional Engineers, and the Robotics Industries of America.
Mr. Mancuso served as Mayor of the City of Carbondale from 1978-1983. Prior to that, he served as a member of Carbondale City Council. He also served on the Lackawanna County Regional Planning Commission, the Scranton-Lackawanna Human Development Agency, the Lackawanna-Luzerne Transportation Committee, and the Economic Development Council of Northeast Pennsylvania. He most recently served as president of Mancuso Beer Barons, Inc., FJM and Sons Realty, Inc., and Harry Letzic Company. He also served as secretary-treasurer for the Crystal Mountain Corporation.
Fred was always proud to say that he served his country in the military. He was a four-year Korean War Air Force veteran, serving for three years with a fighter squadron. He was a member of the American Legion Post 221 of Carbondale as well as the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Moxie Club of Carbondale.
Fred and Fran were always seen together. They enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City and spending evenings at the Mohegan Sun or Mount Airy Casino, or simply spending time watching game shows on television. Together they shared many lasting memories. He was always the first to lend a hand, or just share a smile.
Mr. Mancuso was the son of the late Mary Guzzi and Dominick "Dime" Mancuso, and stepson of the late Mary Mancuso, of Carbondale.
He is also survived by two loving and devoted sons, Dr. Fred Mancuso, D.C., and David and wife, Joleen, all of Carbondale. The "apples of his eye" were his two grandchildren, Danielle and Dustin, of whom he was extremely proud. Also surviving are brothers Donald Mancuso and wife Susan, Carbondale, Dr. Anthony Angelo, Denver, Colorado, and sister-in-law Dorothy Mancuso, Carbondale, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Mancuso.
