John “Jack” S. Smith, of Carbondale, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the Marian Community Hospital, Carbondale.  His wife is the former Margaret Ferko; the couple would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in November.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Stanley and Edna Dix Smith, he attended the First United Methodist Church.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II.  He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, where he played football.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a welder by the Hendrick Manufacturing Company. He was also a coach for the UNICO Youth Football League.  He was a former member of the Misfits Golf League.  He also enjoyed fishing and spending his winters in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Also surviving are: one son, Drew Smith and his wife Julie, Clifford; three daughters — Barbara McDonald, Carbondale; Jackie Pidgeon and her husband Joe, Carbondale; Beth Telemko and her husband Frank, St. Cloud, Fl.; nine grandchildren — Bob, Brooke, Jaime, Justin, Adam, Zack, Melanie, Ryan, and Bailey; five great grandsons; a sister-in-law, Helen Smith; a niece, Sandy Bloes.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Torrance Smith, and a son-in-law, Bob McDonald
The funeral was held Friday, Sept. 30, with services at the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, by the Rev. Doug Posegate, pastor, First United Methodist Church.  Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bob McDonald Scholarship Fund for Juvenile Diabetes, 3 Morrison Terrace, Carbondale, PA 18407.
