John J. McAndrew, 92, of Carbondale died Wednesday morning, Nov. 16, 2011, at home. His wife, the former Kathryn Purcell, died July 2, 2001.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Thomas and Mary Keane McAndrew, he was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church. A 1938 graduate of St. Rose Academy, he was retired from the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, where he worked for 43 years, first as a brakeman and later as a yard foreman. He was a 55-year member of the United Transportation Union. He was also a member of the Msgr. William Farrell Division Ancient Order of Hibernians and Columbia Hose Company #5, and a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 329, Carbondale.
He was loved by his grandsons and all of their friends who would call him “Helper.”
Surviving are: three daughters — Mary Anne McAndrew, Carbondale; Nancy Yavoroski and husband Frank, Simpson; Kathy Rude and husband Thomas, Simpson; two sons — Thomas McAndrew and John McAndrew, Jr., both of Carbondale; five grandsons — Ryan McAndrew, and Timothy, Christopher, Kevin, and Thomas Rude; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by: a sister, Helen Hadley; and a brother, Thomas McAndrew.
The funeral was held Friday, Nov. 18, from the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale, with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment, St. Rose Cemetery.
