Carbondale Area girls rally for big victory at Camoni Tournament

Carbondale Area's Maresa Artone spent last Monday night watching the Chargers win their opening round game vs. Lakeland in a holiday tournament honoring her grandfather, Pete Turonis.

One night later, she took control of the last 4:04 in rallying her Chargerette teammates to a come-from-behind win over Lakeland, 40-35 in the first round of the Lou Camoni Memorial Basketball Tournament at Valley View.

Battlin' Back

Lakeland led by as many as eight points in the first half and 10 points in the second half but just couldn't deliver the knockout blow.

Artone, who lifted herself off the floor a few times after hitting the deck battling for rebounds or taking the ball to the basket, led the CA scoring with seven first half points but the Lady Chiefs posted a 22-16 halftime spread.

With Brooke Estadt leading the way, Lakeland opened a 29-19 lead with 2:13 left in the third period before Anna Totsky drained a trey at the 1:29 mark to keep Carbondale Area within striking distance.

When Amelia Zazzera and Mikenna Walsh banged back-to-back treys to start the fourth, CA suddenly climbed within one, 29-28.

After an exchange of scores, both teams went 2:32 without scoring.

When Artone grabbed an offensive rebound and scored for CA's first lead of the game at 32-31 with 4:04 left then followed a Zazzera drive and basket with another offensive rebound and subsequent two free throw conversions, CA led 36-31.

In the Clutch

With Lakeland looking to cut into a 36-32 CA lead, Artone grabbed a defensive board at the 1:32 mark then converted both ends of a one-and-one for breathing room at 38-32.

Katie Retzbach drained a trey :46 left with to slice the gap to 38-35 but after a CA front end miss with :34 left, Artone secured another defensive rebound that led to Zazzera's game clinching pair of free throws with :06 left.

Artone (13) and Zazzera (12) paced CA while Estadt (12) led Lakeland.
