Lakeland claims pair of wins in league openers

Lakeland claimed a win on the boys and girls’ basketball court to highlight opening night action in the Lackawanna League. League play started with  one divisional game before the annual holiday break.
Divisional games will resume next week.
Boys’ Divisonal Action
Chiefs 75 Mt. View 52
Lakeland’s five point lead swelled to 15 at halftime following an 18-8 second period outburst. Kyle Kiehart (23), Eric Grabowski (20) and Mike Striefsky paced the winners (1-0 D-III, 3-3 overall).
Dunmore 60
Chargers 46
The Bucks 17-10 first perod and 17-12 third period gave the hosts the upper hand. Isaiah McCord (11) led CA (0-1 D-II, 2-5 overall).
Susq. 52 Foresters 33
A 15-10 start and 19-9 finish vaulted the Sabers to the win. Dave Cavalieri (12) led the Forest City (0-1 D-III, 0-5 overall).
Girls’ Divisional Play
Dunmore 61 Chargerettes 25
Carbondale Area (0-1 D-II, 1-4 overall) led at the end of one period but the Lady Bucks produced an 11-0 second period run and 25-9 third period spurt. Sarah Totsky (7) topped CA’s scoring efforts.
Lady Chiefs 57
Mt. View 52
Lakeland’s 30-23 cushion in the middle periods produced the win. Jodie Virbitsky (15) and Allison Kraky (15) paced Lakeland (1-0 D-III, 2-3 overall).
Boys’ Exhibition Basketball
Wallenpaupack 46 Chargers 17
With the Chargers (2-4) struggling to a 5-31 shooting effort in the first half and comitting seven turnovers, the Buckhorns (4-1) took command 31-11.
When the Chargers turned the ball over on on its first five possessions of the second half, W’Pack put the game away.
The Chargers went 7-45 from the field and had 20 turnovers. Shyrif Rivers (8) topped CA’s efforts.
Chiefs 49 Northwest 48
Alex Filarsky nailed a free throw with :07 left to give Lakeland (2-3) the win. Kyle Kiehart (13), Mike Striefsky (10) and Eric Grabowski (10) paced Lakeland’s scoring.

Foresters 21
Dunmore raced to a 17-6 lead and put the game awy with a 19-4 second period. Noah Fedak (9) topped FC.
