But, time and time again, Ely hit the shot that kept the Lady Meteors from allowing Lakeland to seize control and allowed the visitors to remain unbeaten and to claim a 49-41 win.
Jodie Virbitsky ignited a 6-0 Lakeland start in the first 2:31 with all three Lady Chiefs’ baskets in the paint before Ely nailed a deuce.
Montrose produced a 9-5 spurt to tie tghe game after 8:00 of play.
With the Lady Meteors holding a 15-11 margin at the 4:41mark of the second period, Ely went on an 8-3 run with a pair of treys and a deuce to extend the cushion to 23-14 at the 2:08 mark.
Allison Kraky and Virbitsky surrounded a Montrose basket to close the gap to 25-18 at halftime.
The Lady Chiefs inched closer with an 13-11 third period effort then cut the lead to 38-35 when Kraky nailed a shot in the lane and converted a free throw with 4:46 left in the game.
While the Lady Chiefs managed two Kraky free throw conversions over the next 2:37, Ely converted a free throw, dished out an assist then buried a drive to the hoop for a 43-37 lead with 2:09 left.
