Manhattan Manor, 8 Salem Ave., is owned by the Wallis family — George and Marijayne Wallis, and their five children: Katie, Lauren, Mark, Jodi, and Eric. The following interview was conducted with Katie Wallis about the new business opening.
What made your family decide to open this business now?
Our family always wanted to own a restaurant, so when this building [the former Western Bar] became available we took advantage of it. We’ve been renovating it since April, and we opened at the end of September.
How would you describe the business?
It’s a bar, restaurant and lounge. As far as the food goes, we have a small-plates menu that’s designed for sharing. We offer gourmet food and presentation-style meals, at affordable prices. We tried to make it different than anything else in Carbondale, and I think we’ve done that.
What’s the best thing about owning the business as a family?
The fact that we’re able to work together at night, after we come home from our respective day jobs, and we get to spend so much time together doing something we all really enjoy. Every one of us does something at Manhattan Manor, from cooking to bartending to waiting on people, and my mom decorated the whole place.
