Carbondale Area High School announces that Class Night for the graduating Class of 2014 will be held on Wednesday, June 11 and Commencement will be held on Friday, June 13. Both exercises will begin at 7 p.m. and be held in the high school auditorium.

Carbondale Area High School announces that Class Night for the graduating Class of 2014 will be held on Wednesday, June 11 and Commencement will be held on Friday, June 13. Both exercises will begin at 7 p.m. and be held in the high school auditorium.

The Class Night program will include a President’s Welcome given by Anthony Calabro III. The Class Poem, the Class Will, and the Class Prophecy will be read. Presentations will be given to each member of the class. Many different awards and scholarships will be presented.

The Graduation program will include speeches from the class Valedictorian and Salutatorian, Remarks from Dr. Joseph Gorham, Superintendent of Schools, Mr. David Piatak, Commencement Speaker, and Conferring of the Senior Mantle with Junior Response, Presentation of the Ruth Giles Schroeder Scholarship, Remarks and Presentation of Graduates by Joseph W. Farrell, CAHS Principal, and Conferring of Diplomas.

Principal Farrell has announced the following honor graduates of the Class of 2014:

VALEDICTORIAN

Cory Boyko has been chosen as Valedictorian of the Class of 2014.

Boyko has had a commendable scholastic and extracurricular record while attending CA. He is currently ranked first out of approximately 104 students in the senior class. He was selected as CA’s “Scholar of the Year” by a committee of teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators, based on his class rank, excellent scores in the SATs, and his overall contributions to the Carbondale Area Junior Senior High School.

Boyko is a member of the National Honor Society and the Distinguished Honor Roll. He is currently the President of the Science & Technology Club and also President of FBLA. He is a member of Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, the Spanish Club and the Physics Club. He is also a member of both the Mock Trial and Scholastic Bowl Teams.

Aside from his academic and extracurricular pursuits, Boyko is also a member of CA’s soccer team.

Cory will be pursuing a degree in the field of Chemical Engineering at Arcadia University.

He is the son of Lisa and John Boyko of Carbondale.

SALUTATORIAN

Mekenzie Voglino has been chosen as the Class of 2014’s Salutatorian.

Voglino has had a commendable scholastic and extracurricular record while attending CA. She is currently ranked second out of 104 students in the senior class. She was chosen as a “Scholastic Superstar” by the Scranton Times/Tribune.

She is a member of the National Honor Society. She holds the offices of Secretary of the Science and Technology Club, Vice-President of FBLA, President of the Spanish Club, and President of the Future Teachers Organization. She is also a member of the Physics Club and Student Council.

In addition, Voglino was a member of the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce Youth Board and a member of Tomorrow’s Leaders Today.

Mekenzie, who has been accepted into Arcadia University, University of Scranton, and Wilkes, will attend Arcadia. After she completes her undergraduate studies, she plans to be a middle school English teacher.

She is the daughter of Shannon Wall and Victor Voglino of Carbondale.  

THIRD ACADEMIC HONOR

Eliza Totsky is the third academic honor of the Class of 2014.

Totsky has been involved in many extracurricular activities throughout her high school career. She is currently a member of the YMCA Youth Board where she serves as President. She is also a member of the Physics Club, Medical Careers, Science and Technology, and Spanish Clubs.

Totsky participated in PJAS for three years winning many first place awards. She has been a six-year member of the National Honor Society as well as a six-year member of the Academic Honors Program.  She has also participated in sports at CA. She was on the Varsity Basketball and Cheerleading teams throughout her four years at CA.

After graduation, Eliza plans to attend Temple University where she will pursue a Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree.

She is the daughter of Dan and Kris Totsky of Carbondale.

Additionally, Carbondale Area High School announces the guest speaker for Commencement this year will be Mr. David Piatak.

Piatak is a 1990 graduate of Carbondale Area High School and lettered in basketball and tennis. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in aerospace engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1994 and from Old Dominion University in 1999.

While at Penn State, he participated in the engineering cooperative education program which led to a student internship working for NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.

In 1995, Piatak accepted a full-time position at NASA and has loved every minute since.

For the last several years he has served as lead project engineer on many launch vehicle test programs related to the development of America’s next generation of spacecraft and rockets.

Piatak is currently leading a transonic wind-tunnel test effort for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) program.

The Space Launch System is NASA’s heavy lift rocket aimed at expanding human exploration beyond earth orbit and outward toward asteroids, the Moon, and someday Mars.

Piatak has also led or participated in numerous other test and analysis programs such as DARPA’s Morphing Aircraft Structures program, Bell/Army Quad Tiltrotor aeroelastic test program, supersonic parachute development for Mars Exploration Rover (MER) program, Space Shuttle Return to Flight program following loss of Columbia in 2003, Bell V-22 Osprey tiltrotor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and several test programs in support of the Boeing 777/787.

He resides in Williamsburg, VA and is the proud father of three children, Hannah, Joshua, and Amelia.
