CARBONDALE – What’s ‘the myth,’ you wonder? “For us, it’s a particular outcome … something that more and more people say about us that helps spread the word about who and what we are,” said Tommy Nunes, owner/operator of Pizza Guys of Carbondale. Recently re-located to
46 N. Scott Street, Pizza Guys is stepping up their pizza business.
“We bake it like we talk it,” said Nunes, who, some say, literally has pizza in his blood. “I grew up in the pizza business. My grandfather, dad, and aunt each has their own place. Pizza is what I know and what I do best, so opening my own place about three years ago was a natural step for me to take.
“When I decided to go out on my own, I had my family’s full support and guidance, and some great marketing suggestions from business friends. I also developed my own recipes,” he continued. “I use various flours with a higher protein content, good yeast to enhance the dough, along with my own blend of a tasty pasta sauce and a mix of fresh seasonings. It all comes together well. And while regulars have followed us from our initial shop on Church Street, more and more first-timers are stopping by since we’ve relocated. Business is good, and it’s growing every day.”
Nunes offers four distinctly different hand-crafted pizzas, each with a choice of a thin or thick crust. “Peckville is what we’re really known for,” Nunes said. “This 14-in. round pie is made with our homemade airy dough, then sauced and topped with a blend of freshly-grated creamy cheeses. If you like cheese, you’ll love this pie!”
While likened to the ever-popular New York pizza, Nunes’ 14-in. round version “is my very own tasty style of the New York pie with mozzarella cheese. Our Old Forge pie is with the Old Forge-style dough, squared, and again sauced and topped with blended creamy cheeses. And our square Carbondale pie is made with the Old Forge-style dough but topped with mozzarella cheese. Everyone has their own favorite, and every pie can be topped with any of 17 various toppings that make each pie unique to the individual. They’re all delicious – I guarantee it!
“My staff and I take a lot of pride in what we’re making here, so we promise – we honestly guarantee! – that customers will like their pizza or it’s free.” Referring to a sign on his counter, Nunes offers a risk-free 100 percent guarantee of satisfaction. “Our customers are their own judge of what we’re offering,” he said. “We’re just so confident that they’ll love our pizza and will find it amazing. We bake it like we talk it!”
In addition to his signature pies, Pizza Guys’ menu also offers a basic white pie, taco, chicken bacon ranch, vegee, meat lovers, BLT … in fact, Nunes’ shop has a veritable 23 special pies that he says, “help us stand out from other pizza shops. Our newest, the Big Mac pizza, has been on the menu for several weeks, and it’s a huge seller.” Pizza guys also offers six selections of Stromboli, various freshly made salads and specialty wraps, sandwiches made with tasty baguettes and Boar’s Head cold cuts, along with starters like garlic or pizza knots, and cheesy breads.
Loving his work as he does, Nunes further extends himself and his business throughout the Pioneer City. For instance, during softball season, Nunes and Pizza Guys lend help with donations and team sponsorships. “I grew up down the line, but I’ve come to love Carbondale,” he said. “The people, the businesses, it’s great to be part of a city that’s steadily growing.” And in keeping with his community-mindedness, Nunes recently teamed up with several other local businesses, offering a special Valentine’s Day Raffle Giveaway.
“Together, we’re giving away a free package of fun prizes,” he said. “Our goal is to make someone’s Valentine’s Day very special. For every pizza order, customers will receive one raffle ticket to complete and hand-in. On February 7th, just a week before Valentine’s Day, a winner will be randomly selected live on Facebook and notified to come down to our shop to pick up their prizes. It’s a great treat for someone special on a special day. (Included in the wining raffle is a free night’s stay at Hotel Anthracite, a $50 gift card to Total Bliss Massage & Tanning, a $20 gift card to Five Oaks Floral Shoppes, and $25 gift cards to each Plate d’Azure, Life is Beautiful Salon & Spa, and Pizza Guys, along with a week of unlimited tanning to Endless Summer.)
Nunes and his staff recently learned that the Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce selected Pizza Guys of Carbondale as one of five local winners in the 14th Annual Celebrating Progress Award. On February 21st, the Chamber event will be held at the Hotel Anthracite, where the selected businesses will be recognized for exemplifying growth, progress, and their various contributions to the Pioneer City. For additional information or to order tickets to the event, contact the Chamber at 570-282-1690.
