Kristina Gorel has been selected as Carbondale Area’s “Scholar of the Year” by a committee of teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators, based on her class rank, excellent scores in the SATs, and her overall contributions to the Carbondale Area Junior Senior High School.

The Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit 19 and WUSR-FM (99.5 FM), radio station of the University of Scranton, sponsor the “Scholar of the Year” program.

Kristina has had a commendable scholastic and extracurricular record while attending Carbondale Area. She is currently ranked first out of approximately 86 students in the senior class. Kristina is a member of the National Honor Society and the Distinguished Honor Roll.

Kristina is a participating member of PJAS for the past 6 years. She has also been an active member of Mock Trial for the past two years and voted best attorney during trial presentations. She was our Football Cheerleading Captain. She is President of FBLA as well as the FBLA region’s secretary.

She is a member of Tomorrow’s leaders today and she is a student ambassador for Senator John Blake. She is Student Council Vice-President. Demonstrating her over all well-roundedness, Kristina was also a member of our soccer and track and field teams. 

Kristina is the daughter of Andy and Rachele Gorel of Simpson. 

When asked how she feels about being selected for this honor she replied, “I’m both surprised and honored. It’s always a great feeling to be recognized for your efforts and accomplishments that you put so much work into. It is a great achievement.” Kristina will attend the University of Pennsylvania to major in Psychology with a focus in Pre-Law.
