CARBONDALE — The Greater Carbondale Chamber of Commerce (GCCC) recently held their 14TH Annual Celebrating Progress Dinner at the Hotel Anthracite in Carbondale.
The event was held to honor four local businesses for their notable achievements and contributions that have enhanced the overall community of Carbondale and the surrounding area.
The hosts of the event were Michele Bannon, GCCC Board President, and John P. Gorel, Executive Director of the GCCC. Father James Price, CPC: and Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Rose of Lima churches gave the invocation.
Bannon opened the dinner with Welcoming Remarks and recognized the Board of Directors and thanked all segments of the community for their support.
The Chamber's Board of Directors nominate and vote on the winners of the award each year at this year's event a board member introduced an honoree who was recognized for their respective achievements.
The plaques of recognition were awarded to: Pizza Guys of Carbondale, Johnson College, Hotel Anthracite, Clifford Township and Rails to Trails Council of NEPA.
Bannon presented a 2019 Honoree Award to Katie Leonard, President and CEO of Johnson College, on behalf of the college.
Bannon gave a history on Johnson College and noted that 400 students pursue degrees in 13 different trade, technical or clinical programs including a Veterinary Technology program, a computer information technology program, and a curriculum in Radiologic Technology are a few of the programs offered.
Bannon said, “President Leonard has been spending countless hours interacting with industry and educators to fulfill Mr. Johnson's vision to create an institution of students that can be taught the arts and trades to make an honorable living."
She congratulated Johnson College, President Leonard, their Board of Directors, and staff, and thanked them for being a 2019 Celebrating Progress Award Honoree,
Vince O'Dell, Treasurer of the GCCC Board, presented a Member Recognition Award to To Nunes, the owner of Pizza Guys of Carbondale.
The pizza parlor is located at 7 North Church Street in Carbondale.
The eatery offers a variety of pizza including steak and cheese, BBQ chicken, double crust and hot wing pizza.
Tommy spoke about his business and dedicated his Progress Award to his mother who he said, "She was instrumental in her support of him in his business venture",
Michael J. Stanton, Board Member, presented a Member Recognition Award to Justin and Jenna Simpler on behalf of the Hotel Anthracite.
Justin is the Executive General Manager and Director of Hotel Operations at Settlers Hospitality.
The Hotel Anthracite was acquired by Justin Genzlinger of the Settlers Hospitality Group and Rob Grimm of Grimm Construction last year.
