An evening of summer fun for kids is slated to take place at the Greater Carbondale YMCA, 82 N. Main St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6. The event will be held rain or shine, with most activities taking place inside the building.

James Wiggins, program and special events director at the Y, said he enjoys organizing this event because much of the preparations fall to the children participating in the YMCA’s summer camp for school age kids.

“This is the most laidback thing I do. It basically runs itself. The summer campers make the carnival games and run them, and the counselors supervise,” explained Mr. Wiggins.

According to Mr. Wiggins, the camp numbers around 150 participants and having the campers help with the Y’s summer carnival is a longtime tradition that gives the campers, who range in age from six to thirteen years old, a sense of giving back to the Y and to the community.

There will be lots to do at the Y’s summer carnival, with everything free or at a low, family-friendly price. In the enclosed play yard off the main lobby, event attendees will find a dunk tank and refreshments.

Refreshments will be available at a nominal cost and will include festive summer fare like hotdogs, hamburgers, drinks, chips, and nachos. A bake sale will also be held during the event so attendees can buy some sweet treats to nosh.

Carnival games will cost 25 cents each to play, with participants purchasing tickets for that amount and each game costing one ticket.

In addition to the carnival games, kids can participate in open swim, play in the bounce houses, or get a balloon animal made just for them by a friendly clown.

A photo booth will be set up with a luau theme and guests are encouraged to dress for D.I.Y. photos in Hawaiian shirts, leis, and other tropical-inspired clothing. Attendees may take as many of their own photos as they’d like using the props available.

In addition to the Summer Carnival, the Greater Carbondale YMCA hosts several other free, family-oriented events for the community, including the Fall Festival, the Winter Carnival, and Healthy Kids Day.
