Yesterday, the Lackawanna College Allied Health Division hosted a Caregiver Day for over 80 volunteers from Telespond Senior Services, Inc.’s Senior Companion Program in Scranton. The event provided volunteers with training, valuable information and demonstrations on administering safe care and creating a balance between competing caregiving demands and daily life.

Telespond’s Senior Companion Program volunteers are part of a team of caregivers that provide short- term assistance to primary caregivers taking care of older adults. Volunteers support primary caregivers by helping with errands, daily activities and tasks.

“The caregiver brings a smile and positive attitude to each day, which can really make a difference in an older adult’s life,” said Maggie Prudente, Director of the Lackawanna College’s Health Aide Programs.

“Our Allied Health Division recognizes that caregivers need information, help and support,” stated Carrie Griffiths, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. “Caregiver Day provides essential strategies and skills caregivers need, but might not have access to.”

The event covered a wide range of topics that educated caregivers in ways to gauge potential problems so they could decrease an individual’s chances of being hospitalized. Topics included tips for bathing, safe transfer techniques, adaptive equipment to improve occupational performance, wound care and more.

“Caregiver Day was a great learning experience and a major accomplishment for our volunteers and the clients they serve,” said Kathleen Coyne, Director of Telespond’s Senior Companion Program.
